Exploring Powell River, BC

My short trip to Vancouver brought me all the way up the Sunshine Coast to Powell River! After traveling for over four hours and taking two ferries (full journey and my take on BC Ferries in my previous post!) We finally made it to Powell River – we arrived around 7:30PM and were in need of some dinner!

We explored the area and found some awesome places – there are great locally owned restaurants and shops closer to the coast, and if you’re in the mood for fast-food and quick eats, further in-land there are a bunch of options like subway, mcdonalds and more!

We opted for a local pizzeria called Supercharger Pizza, it was a small but lovely and modern restaurant with a great deal during their happy hour! We got their margarita pizza and it was hot and fresh! There were so many tasty options to choose from – like the veggie deluxe with tomato sauce, mozzarella blend, broccoli, roasted red pepper, red onion, olives, mushrooms, parmesan and chili flakes! Or the Boss Hog pizza with tomato sauce, mozzarella blend, braised pork shoulder, jalapeno, smoked Italian cheese, BBQ rub, BBQ sauce, garlic cream, and red onion! There is also a featured pie that changes bi-weekly – so be sure to ask about it! We had some wine and waited for our pizza, ate and called it a night!

The next day we head out early to grab some coffee and get the day started! The first stop was Willingdon Beach Park – we visited here around 9am and it was the perfect way to start the day! It had a long pier that extended into the water where many people were enjoying the peaceful waves and fishing! We also saw a sea lion swimming around peacefully near the end of the pier!

After taking some time to enjoy the park, we drove a few minutes to the Townsite Viewpoint! This is an elevated point where you’re able to view the concrete ships – also known as “The Hulks”! This is also the world’s largest floating breakwater that has been docked since the 1940’s! Some locals say that this is a great spot to whale watch at certain times of the year, just be sure to bring your binoculars!

Next, we took a hike up Valentine Mountain – which was a short but rewarding hike (full blog on this hike, coming soon!) After our hike, we needed to re-fuel, so we went to the Powell River Farmers Market to grab a quick bite and check out the vendors! We had a great time here, we had some awesome treats here like vegan sushi and chocolate cake, as well as organic honey! We also picked up some handmade goods like blackberry soap!

Lastly we took a little spontaneous drive to Lund, we made a stop at The Laughing Oyster, a stunning restaurant with impeccable views – however they were unfortunately closed but the owner was really friendly and let us come around to the back and take some photos and take in the view!

After driving further up, we stumbled upon a small area with some awesome restaurants and shops. We decided to eat at The Boardwalk Restaurant and it was a great ambiance, it was right on the water and had some great food! We got BBQ wings and cheesy seafood poutine! The wings were a staple, nothing out of the ordinary, but still really good and the seafood poutine was stacked with salmon, clams, mussels and calamari and the steak cut fries were fresh and the perfect combo!

Overall, if you are thinking about visiting the sunshine coast, you have to put Powell River on your list!

Sincerely, Celine
